Creating Change Through Accountability

Violence Free Program

The Violence Free program is an educational, support-group–based batterer intervention program designed to help participants understand and take responsibility for violent and controlling behaviors. Through guided group sessions, participants learn how their actions impact others and develop healthier, non-abusive ways of relating in intimate relationships.

This program is focused on increasing victim safety, reducing repeat offenses, and supporting long-term behavioral change.

How the Violence Free Program Works

Participants move through a structured process that combines education, reflection, and accountability. The program is designed to help individuals recognize patterns of abuse, understand the seriousness of their actions, and build skills for respectful, non-violent relationships.

Sessions are held in a group setting and follow North Dakota Batterer’s Treatment Standards, using an internationally recognized curriculum focused on meaningful change.

Supporting Safer Relationships

Intake and Orientation
  • Before beginning group sessions, participants complete an intake and orientation process with Violence Free staff. During this step, paperwork is completed and expectations for participation are clearly explained. If attendance is court-ordered, written confirmation of intake and orientation completion is provided to the court.
Group Sessions
  • The program consists of 27 group sessions that address key topics related to abusive behavior. Activities are designed to help participants accept responsibility for their actions, understand why abusive choices are harmful, and learn non-abusive alternatives. Respectful participation and honest self-reflection are essential parts of the process.
Ongoing Accountability and Growth
  • Throughout the program, participants are encouraged to examine beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that contribute to violence. The goal is not only compliance, but long-term change that supports safer families and communities.
