How It All Began

Family Crisis Shelter was founded decades ago in response to a growing and urgent need within the 58802 region. Local advocates, survivors, and community leaders recognized that too many individuals facing domestic violence, homelessness, and crisis situations had nowhere safe to turn. Determined to change that, they came together to create a refuge — a place where every person, regardless of background, could find safety, compassion, and a path forward.

From the very beginning, our mission was clear: to provide a safe haven and comprehensive support for survivors while engaging the broader community to stand together against violence. What started as a small volunteer‑led initiative has grown into a full‑service organization supported by staff, partners, and donors who believe deeply in community support for survivors.
