February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month—a time dedicated to shining a light on the experiences of young people, encouraging open conversations, and empowering communities to promote safe, respectful, and healthy relationships.

Teen dating violence affects millions of adolescents each year. It can show up in many forms—emotional, verbal, physical, digital, or sexual—and often goes unnoticed or unreported. By raising awareness, we help teens recognize unhealthy behaviors early and know where to turn for support.

What Teen Dating Violence Looks Like

Teen dating violence is not always obvious. Sometimes it looks like constant texting, controlling who someone can spend time with, pressuring them to share passwords, or manipulating them through guilt or fear. Other times it involves direct threats, physical harm, or harassment online.

No matter the form it takes, every young person deserves to feel respected, valued, and safe.

How We Can Support Teens

• Encourage open conversations: Teens often need reassurance that they can talk without judgment. Simple, supportive dialogue can make a world of difference.
• Model healthy relationships: Demonstrate boundaries, communication, and respect in your own relationships.
• Know the warning signs: Isolation, sudden behavior changes, fear of upsetting their partner, or signs of monitoring or control are all red flags.
• Share resources: Make sure teens know where to find confidential help and community support.
